WHAT: Elderhostel is bringing a musical Day of Discovery, Culture & The Melting Pot: Classical, Modern and World Music: Embracing the Folk Tradition, to the residents of The Hallmark Battery Park City.
Program highlights include:
- Live, musical performances by world-renowned harpist Bridget Kibbey and mandolinist Joseph Brent.
- Lectures on the history and cultural traditions of music, emphasizing the folk tradition.
- A behind-the-scenes look at the preparation required for classical music performances.

For Elderhostel’s inaugural program with Brookdale Senior Living, classical, modern and world music will be highlighted. In addition, residents will be encouraged to embrace the Folk Tradition and learn about the influence of folk music in the highlighted music genres. Mandolin and harp music will be featured.
A graduate of the Juilliard School, harpist Bridget Kibbey has performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. She recently released a solo album entitled, Love is Come Again, and the album was named one of 2007's Top 10 Recordings by Time Out New York magazine.
Mandolinist Joseph Brent has been hailed for his reinvention of the role of the mandolin in modern music. He has performed with the New York City Ballet, as well as numerous other symphonies and chamber ensembles. He recently published Orchestral and Chamber Excerpts and Scales and Arpeggios, books focused on mandolin pedagogy.
Brookdale Senior Living and Elderhostel are in the process of planning additional Days of Discovery at select Brookdale communities across the country.
