Brookdale Senior Residence Honored With Community Award

Rochester, NY 6/19/2008

The Gables at Brighton, a Brookdale Senior Living independent living community, was recently honored by the Brighton Volunteer Ambulance (BVA) with their Community Connection Award. The BVA Community Connection Award is given to an individual, organization or entity (public or private) that by their actions and/or deeds has provided BVA with the ability to maintain the highest quality pre-hospital care and/or take an active role in promoting community awareness of the role of EMS in its town. The award was presented at the BVA Open House during National EMS Week in May by the BVA president, Duncan Ververs. The Gables at Brighton is an independent senior living community located in the Town of Brighton Special Ambulance District bordering Rochester N.Y. During the past three years, The Gables at Brighton has shown its dedication to the work of Brighton Volunteer Ambulance by opening its doors to BVA for their use, including:

  • Implementing the Vial of Life Program. This program allows Gables residents to place a brief medical history and list of medications in a pill vial in the refrigerator. The resident places a sticker on his or her door to alert ambulance crews to look for that vial or bottle to have rapid access to medical information that may impact the treatment emergency crews provide.
  • Hosting the dedication of the new BVA ambulance.
  • Hosting a holiday buffet, receptions, and recognition programs for BVA and Brighton Fire Department members.
  • Hosting and promoting a recent Advance Care Directives/Medical Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment program with Excellus BlueCross BlueShield in conjunction with National Healthcare Decisions Day.
  • Hosting a breakfast for BVA and Brighton Fire Department.
  • Offering the use of its meeting rooms for the BVA to hold membership or community meetings.
  • Offering to help coordinate classes for EMS personnel on geriatrics and related subjects.

"The Gables Brighton has proven their commitment to supporting BVA in its mission of serving the Brighton community," said Michael E. Pollock, public information officer for BVA. "They have demonstrated their dedication to their residents, BVA and the Brighton community by their active participation, helping us provide the high level of pre-hospital EMS care that the people of the town of Brighton have come to expect."

"We are honored to receive an award of this caliber," said Bill Teschke, executive director of The Gables at Brighton. "We appreciate all the help the Brighton Volunteer Ambulance has given us to ensure the highest possible care for our residents, and look forward to working with them in the future."
